What happens if you exceed payload capacity?
Pickup trucks are made for carrying items and pulling things in trailers. Even when you decide to purchase a smaller pickup truck, it still usually has the ability to carry at least 2,000 pounds. However, even powerful trucks have their limits. What happens if you exceed payload capacity? Great question and you are in the right place! Learn more about payload capacity below.
What is payload capacity?
Payload capacity is the amount of weight that the truck can carry. This includes the weight of the passengers, driver, cargo inside of the truck, and anything that is in the bed of the truck. Payload capacity is different for every truck, so that is something that drivers need to be aware of before loading up. It is important to also keep in mind that towing capacity is different from payload capacity!
How do I know if my truck is over its payload capacity?
There will be several indications that your truck is above its payload capacity. First, you will notice that steering your vehicle will be heavier. Overloading your truck causes added pressure to the shocks and suspension system resulting in it being more difficult to control.
Did you know that tires actually have a limit as to how much they can carry? If you put too much weight in your truck this can actually cause a blow out in one of your tires. This probably would not end well with everything that you have in your truck.
Other things that can happen include structural damage to the truck when going over a bump or pothole in the road as well as issues with the transmission. The best way to avoid any of these circumstances is to remain under the payload capacity.
Where can I find the payload capacity of my truck?
There is typically a sticker inside of the driver’s door sill with the payload capacity. Otherwise, this is definitely in the owner’s manual. One last tip that we have is making sure that you evenly spread out the items you are carrying. If you do not, it becomes much easier for the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
