Who doesn’t enjoy listening to music in the car? Whether on the way to work, during a long trip, or in a traffic jam; no matter the moment, while driving, listening to your favorite songs is always an indescribable experience.

Music has always been closely linked to driving. All current vehicles have high-quality music equipment, although in the past all cars already had a space reserved for the mythical cassette player. In the current context, where technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, the options for listening to music in the car multiply.

Music & heart rate

Driving is a task that requires all our attention, and although we are not aware of it, music has a significant influence on our mood. The rhythm of music affects the heart rate and brain activity of people.

If the rhythm of the song is fast, the driver tends to step on the accelerator more. Furthermore, if the volume of the song is louder, the driver’s attention span is reduced. Therefore, it increases the risk of accidents.

The worst style of music for driving

A study carried out by the German University of Dortmund concludes that drivers who listen to pop-rock music tend to drive faster and more aggressively than those who choose classical music.

The company Populus, from the UK, also maintains that drivers who listen to rock music at the wheel are more likely to have an accident. According to their study, 76% of those surveyed claimed to have shouted or insulted other drivers, and 31% said they had been involved in a minor accident, compared to 13% of young people who listened to pop music. They also don’t recommend listening to jazz music at the wheel, because it increases the possibility of committing infractions, especially speeding. Populus maintains this is because the complexity of jazz forces the driver to pay more attention to the music than to the road.

The best music to drive with that other studies and experts recommend are classical music and pop music, as they favor a more relaxed attitude.

According to experts, the best song to travel safely by car is one that has a tempo like your heart. That is, between 60 and 80 beats per minute.
All studies on how music influences driving conclude that rock or heavy-metal music can make us step on the accelerator harder; rap distracts us and leads to more aggressive driving, and classical offers us a more relaxed driving.

  • Avoid turning the car stereo volume too high to avoid distractions.
  • At the wheel, always be attentive to the road. If the music distracts you, turn it off.
